Original Vehicle

The Auto Union Type D was the last in the legendary line of mid-engined racing cars that began with Ferdinand Porsche's original Type A in 1934. Having the engine behind the driver was considered radical and dangerous in the 1930s. The rear weight bias made the cars notoriously difficult to handle, and only the most gifted drivers could master them.

With the Type D, Tazio Nuvolari — "Il Diabolo", the "Flying Mantuan" — won the 1938 Italian Grand Prix and, at Donington Park on 22 October 1938, the Donington Grand Prix, driving start number 4. In 1939 H.P. Müller won the French Grand Prix in a Type D, and Nuvolari won the Belgrade Grand Prix on 3 September 1939 — the last Grand Prix before the Second World War. The mid-engine concept pioneered by Auto Union would not become standard in Formula 1 until the Cooper revolution of the late 1950s. After the war, Auto Union eventually evolved into modern-day Audi.
