With the streamliner body of the W196, Mercedes-Benz surprised the whole racing scene once more, giving its return to Grand Prix racing after the war a completely new look.
At its debut, the 1954 French Grand Prix at Reims, Mercedes started three Streamliners and scored a dream one-two: Juan Manuel Fangio first, Karl Kling second. From then on the Mercedes stars Fangio, Kling and Stirling Moss celebrated great successes with both the Streamliner and the open-wheeled W196 Monoposto, and Fangio won his second and third world championships with the W196 in 1954 and 1955. As at Reims, the Streamliner also won the last Grand Prix of the 1955 season at Monza, again with Fangio — the W196's final start, after which Mercedes withdrew from Formula 1.
