The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR (W196S) was a two-seat sports racer built on the W196 Formula One car: a tubular spaceframe clothed in magnesium-alloy panels, powered by the 3.0-litre M196 straight-eight with desmodromic valve actuation.
On 1 May 1955 Stirling Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson covered the 1,597 km Brescia–Rome–Brescia course in 10 hours 7 minutes 48 seconds, averaging 157.65 km/h — the fastest Mille Miglia ever run, and a record never beaten. Their start time gave the car its number, #722. Jenkinson navigated from a roller-scroll of hand-made pace notes, an innovation that effectively invented modern rally navigation. Moss and Jenkinson finished ahead of their team-mate Juan Manuel Fangio. The 300 SLR went on to win the 1955 World Sportscar Championship before Mercedes-Benz withdrew from racing at the end of the season.
