Condition Report

Original Vehicle

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W194) marked Mercedes' return to international motorsport with the Silver Arrows racing again after a 13-year absence. At the 1952 Grand Prix of Bern at the Bremgarten circuit, three 300 SL cars started in unusual colourful livery: dark red (#16 Caracciola), green (#18 Kling), and blue (#20 Lang). Mercedes achieved a triple victory with Kling winning, Lang second, and Riess third. The celebration was overshadowed when Rudolf Caracciola crashed in lap 13, suffering a broken femur that effectively ended his career. The gull-wing doors were not stylistic but an engineering necessity — the high tubular spaceframe sills left no room for conventional doors.
